What Is the Chipmunks Dance Trend?

Last updated:

The Chipmunks Dance trend is a 25-second trio dance filmed on a phone propped on the floor. Three people line up, take turns rushing at the lens, spin and flip their hair, then finish side by side, all to a sped-up, chipmunk-voiced remix.

How the routine works

Every version follows the same shape. The three dancers start in a row a few steps from the camera and bounce into the beat. One dancer runs up to the lens with arms wide, then backs off while another takes the front with a spin. They swap places a few times, someone jumps, and for the final stretch all three line up for the same moves and a last pose with an arm in the air.

The camera never moves. It sits on the ground and points slightly up, which makes every run-up feel huge and gives the clip its chaotic, close-up energy.

Why it is called the chipmunks dance

The song is a sped-up version of “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)” with high, chipmunk-like vocals, and three dancers line up the way Alvin, Simon and Theodore or the Chipettes do. Many groups lean into it with matching trio outfits, which is why the trend took off around Halloween costume season.

Who posts it

Siblings, roommates, best friends and families. The format is forgiving: nobody has to be a trained dancer, and the messier the run-ups, the funnier the clip. The hard part is getting three people together with a free court or gym and a phone that stays upright on the floor.
